Each year, Labor & Industries holds an employee survey period where staff answer questions and provide input about everything at the agency from their individual work areas to the overall mission. The multimedia team takes on producing a video to promote the survey to staff. Since this is an internal video, we can have a little more fun with it so oftentimes it is where we play around or try to learn something new.
I had been wanting to do more 3D work as part of my multimedia position, and this presented a unique opportunity. Another member of the multimedia team produced the music parodying “I’m Just A Bill” from Schoolhouse Rock with the lyrics changed to be about the L&I employee survey. I handled producing, shooting, and editing this piece.
I designed the 3D character (who I lovingly call Monty) from scratch with heavy inspiration drawn from BMO of Adventure Time (again, way more free range for an internal piece). I utilized Rokoko Vision for motion capture for the character to fully animate Monty organically. Everything in this spot was produced in-house, utilizing the skills of the team and the hobbies they were passionate about. It was cute, fun, and so educational. To this day, Monty is one of my proudest achievements. The spot was well received by staff as an added bonus.
Oftentimes, I can plateau when learning a new skill. I’d felt kind of stuck in my 3D animation experience for a while, but this project got me to the next stage in my learning journey and I was able to improve my skills significantly from there. My 3D work is rarely called on for my current role, but personal projects have greatly benefited from the knowledge I gained from this video.
